Product Description
50 Years of Music in Hawaii is a look back at a half-century of music from, Hawaiian,
contemporary, to world-class instrumentals and so much more. This is the story of
Tom Moffatt and his stamp on shaping the Music in Hawaii over the past 50 years.
At 19, Tom arrived here fresh off the farm from Michigan in 1950. Who knew he would
become the show business and music icon of the Pacific – a showman who would
work
with nearly every major act in the music business both from Hawaii and abroad.
Tom Moffatt was the first to help shape and create the model of modern Top 40 radio
and music in what was still the Territory of Hawaii. From inside “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, which
was broadcast from a local drive-in instead of a conventional radio studio, he introduced
Hawaii to an exciting new generation of entertainers and their music, but “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”
was only the beginning. Tom also was a leader hosting TV dance programs, nightclubs
for teens and presenting the major pop acts of the day in the “Show of Stars” concerts at
the Civic Auditorium. On New Year’s Day, 1969, Tom presented the first Diamond
Head Crater Festival.
One of Tom’s biggest “productions” was to help create K-POI radio – Hawaii’s hottest station
ever – featuring the unforgettable “POI Boys” and their groundbreaking promotions. In all his
roles –as “POI Boy” and radio station executive, concert promoter, record company president
and author -- Tom cultivated lasting friendships with artists ranging from Elvis Presley and
Don Ho to Dick Jensen aka “The Giant,” Teddy Randazzo, Jimmy Buffett, Keola and Kapono
Beamer and Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole. Throughout his career, Tom always remained
dedicated to his craft in giving his best to the people of Hawaii.
Here is a fascinating look at the history – 50 years of music from Hawaii through the eyes
and ears of a true American Showman with the heart of a Hawaiian.
