Product Description
During the spring of 2001, David Daniels, a.k.a. Davey D. proposed to Ikaika
Kimura, a new local music video show idea - themed after Davey’s Overdrive
Live
radio show, a television counterpart - offering a visual perspective to
listeners.
However, this was not a new idea, it has been done before - Sound Waves
&
Island Video Jam hosted by Billy V, Trini Kaopuiki, Patricia Ford, and Augie,
thus
setting the standard which we would have to follow or innovate.
Davey and Ikaika decided to take this leap together and had nothing to
lose
except their time and effort. They completed 12 music videos in a four month
period with artists like Keahiwai, Damon Williams featuring Fiji, Opihi
Pickers,
Sean Na’auao, Justin and Bitty McLean, Kahiau, and Kapena to name
a few.
With the help of Tiny Tadani, Overdrive Live was born, debuting July 2001
on OC16
After the first month, Davey and Ikaika wanted to make the show interactive
by incorporating a voting system that would allow the viewers to decide
the music videos to feature the next week, a concept similar to MTV’s
TRL
(Total Request Live) hosted by Carson Daly. The idea became a huge success,
sometimes accumulating over one million per week.
Over the next 2 years, the show continued to grow on OC16, from 5 nights
a week
at 10pm to 42 times a week at 6:30pm statewide! The growth has been nothing
short of phenomenal. We have gained more local music interest - setting
a new
standard visually for local music, creating an avenue for local artists
to express
their songs through music videos.
This first volume Overdrive Live DVD is a collection of 18 music videos
that
have been on the show. Our vault now contains over 70 local music videos,
some
to be released later in a future volume.
