Product Description
Named after the Thor Heyerdahl raft set adrift in the Pacific
Ocean, the Kon-Tiki (the raft) overcame
great obstacles and hardships to eventually land in the Polynesian Islands
introducing new perspectives
on the origin of the Polynesian people to a doubting and skeptical world.
Like the raft that introduced new
scientific possibilities, Kontiki introduces a fresh fusion of island reggae
and tribal Polynesian rhythms. The
result is crossover-reggae with a Polynesian perspective and a positive
message celebrating triumph; hope;
faith; and endurance in the quest for a better life.
Kontiki has been playing at venues throughout the West and Hawaii since
1990. They started playing
at Polynesian festivals in Southern California and quickly developed a strong
following and became
the band of choice for the Tahiti Fete, an annual international competition
in San Jose, California. Since
then Kontiki has gone on to play at Reggae by the Bay, and toured with Gregory
Issacs, Lucky Dube,
Ras Michael and Daddy Uroy.
Stand Tall, the title track off their first CD, was a familiar saying of
Loma Mataele (older brother and cousin
of Kontiki band members) who was tragically gunned-down in 1996 while in
South Central Los Angeles.
We will never forget him in our lives. In our music we continue to
strive to reach people with HIS
message to always remain true and Stand Tall.
