HO’ALA
(Awaken, Uprise, Arouse)
This fresh new group consists of four young men who have played with a
collection of musicians over the years. Through their experience they bring
a sound that they have all grown up listening to and emulating, which is a
twist of Hawaiian and contemporary island music.
Abraham “Kiki” Keala, is the son of the late musical great, Uncle Abe Keala,
formerly of the group the Blalas and Three Scoops of Aloha. Kiki’s laid back
vocals and smooth guitar riffs are that of a haunting reminder of his father, Uncle
Abe...it is featured in songs such as “Good Time Charlie, Keaukaha
and the albums opening track Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua.
Kalani “Mr. Offisah” Miles hails from Waimanalo and was raised partially on
Maui. Kalani’s love of music started in the second grade ukulele class, and
also
being from Waimanalo, had always found him among music legends during
dad’s
backyard jams. Kalani is featured in the remake of Uncle Abe Keala’s Poka’i
Bay, (USA),
which also features the hot and talented group “B.E.T.”. Kalani is also featured
on 2
compostions
written by the talented Kihei Nahale-A, “Splendid” features the vocals of special
guest,
longtime friend and former band mate, Sani Apuakehau and the beautiful Hawaiian l
ove song entitled “Ka Pua”. Kalani is also one of Maui’s finest.
Lanakila “Kila” Makua, is the group’s true hawaiian. An educator of the
Hawaiian language “Kila” as he is known to his friends, is a talented composer
and guitar player. Also growing up in Waimanalo Kila brings cutural value
and the
knowledge of the Hawaiian language to the group. As Ho’ala’s members have
other ventures within music, Kila also plays with a group known as the “Waimanalo
Sunset Band”, which plays predominantly traditional Hawaiian music. Kila’s
Eddie Kamae like vocals are featured in Manu O’o and Kona Kai O Pua.
And last but not least the youngest member of Ho’ala, is our bass man,
Darren K. Ho’opi’i. Darren was raised in a musically inclined family, (Ho’opi’i),
and is the younger brother of Makapu Ho’opi’i, who is the bass player of
Maui’s most
popular reggae band, “Ekolu”, Darren has also stood on stage with a few big names.
Darren brings a bag load of talent to Ho’ala as it’s primary bass player, but is also
versed in other stringed instruments as well. Darren is our high-flying vocalist
as he is
featured
doing a traditional Hawaiian falsetto number entitled “Ku’u Wa Li’i Li’i.
Collectively these young men make up the group Ho’ala, so sit back, relax and
enjoy a little bit of both as we share with you, Ho’ala’s self titled debut album.
ENJOY.........
