In 1986 I was asked by Robert Shinoda (Nueva Vida) to sing an original Christmas song written by Gordon Okimoto. The song, Christmas Once More IN Hawai’i Nei had been a runner-up in a local radio station song contest. It was released as a playable Christmas postcard single. Ten years later (1996), Gordon re-released it on a four track CD he had written and produced. Robert’s beautiful musical and vocal arrangement, Kapono Beamer’s slack key guitar solo and support from local radio airplay has helped make this song a local Christmas classic. I am happy to present it to you again (2006) along with songs from some of my favorite local songwriters. Gordon’s Our Island Christmas and A Christmas Day In The Sun are also included.
Jerry Santos has sung A Christmas Lei of Wildflowers for many years. Written by Becky Mello, it is about a mother’s Christmas wish for her family. He thought it would be a touching follow-up to our duet, “Devoted To You,” on his Expecting Friends CD (1989). He graciously consented to sing with me on this beautiful song and Silent Night, accompanied by Kapono Beamer.
Patrick Downes (Flying, Far Too Wide, Waimea Lullaby) and I have worked together several times throughout the years. I recorded his songs Hamakua and Honolulu Lights on previous recordings. My good friend, Peter Jones, came up with the idea of a Korean Christmas song. With the popularity of Korean dramas, Korean food, and the fact that I am hapa Korean, I thought it was a great idea. I called Patrick with the challenge. One week later, Korean Christmas was done. Patrick, you are amazing! His second song is Island Christmas. Patrick’s beautiful island style lyrics and melody are his trademark.
Lance Jyo and I recorded Christmas In Our Hearts in 2000 as a duet. I always loved this song and its message of peace makes it so appropriate for the times we live in.
Gordon Kim is a partner in George Street and a life long friend. He has written unbelievable songs for me to sing throughout my recording career. His inspiration for That’s Christmas To Me was my oldest son graduating from high school and the rest of the George Street kids soon to follow. Its touching message is very special to me.
